What the badges mean

The public checklist behind every directory badge. These are thin editorial checks: is this the real project, where do its downloads come from, and what should a reader verify. Not security audits. Not rankings. Not buy recommendations.

ReviewedReviewed

A listing is Reviewed only when an editor has checked every point below on the date shown on the listing.

  1. Check 1

    Official site confirmed

The listed URL is the project's own primary site or source repository, reached independently, not through an ad, a sponsored search slot, or a link someone sent.

  2. Check 2

    Download path traced

Where the project ships software, we follow the official site to its own release page, app-store listing, or package source, and note any lookalike domains or clones we see.

  3. Check 3

    Verification path stated

Where the project publishes signatures, checksums, or reproducible-build notes, the listing says so, so readers can check a download themselves. If it publishes none, the risk note says that.

  4. Check 4

    Licence recorded

The listing names the licence, or says plainly that the product is not fully open source.

  5. Check 5

    Inside the education fence

The core product is a tool, client, runner, or learning resource. Custody, exchange, swap routing, yield products, and token sales do not get a Reviewed badge.

  6. Check 6

    Risk note written

Every Reviewed listing carries at least one plain caveat, such as what to verify, what is closed source, or what has moved.

  7. Check 7

    Dated and logged

The listing shows the date of the check, and the change appears in the public verification changelog.

The 90-day re-check

A Reviewed badge holds for 90 days from the date on the listing. Before it lapses, an editor runs the whole checklist again. If the re-check does not happen in time, the listing goes back to Listed, and the change is logged. Projects move domains, archive repositories, and change licences, so an old check is not worth much.

11 of 22 listings are Reviewed right now. The next re-check is due by 2027-01-10. Listings marked Reviewed before this page went up (30 Oct 2026) were checked against an earlier, shorter version of this list. Each one gets the full list at its next re-check.

ListedListed

The default state. We added the project because it fits a self-custody, privacy, or decentralization audience, and we keep a risk note on it. Nobody has run the full checklist yet. Listed is not an endorsement.

QuestionableQuestionable

We found something a reader should know before trusting the project. Examples: the official domain changed without notice, releases are unsigned or do not match their published checksums, a published security advisory has no fix, impersonation clones are circulating, or the product has moved into custody or token sales. The listing stays up with a note explaining why, so readers can learn from it.

WithdrawnWithdrawn

The project is gone, abandoned, or now sits outside the education fence. We keep it struck through, with the reason in the changelog, so the record stays honest.

What a review is not

  • Not a code review or security audit. We do not test the software.
  • Not a ranking. Listings are not ordered by quality.
  • Not financial advice or a recommendation to buy, hold, or use anything.
  • Not for sale. Sponsorship never buys or keeps a Reviewed badge, and sponsored listings carry a visible Sponsored label.
  • Not a check on your copy. A badge cannot tell you the file on your device is genuine. Verify signatures or checksums yourself.

Spotted a problem?

If a listing's domain, download path, or licence has changed, email info@cryptodecentral.co.za. Agents can read the same states from /api/directory.json.
