What a hardware wallet actually does
A hardware wallet keeps private keys on a dedicated device and asks you to confirm transaction details on a trusted screen. Your phone or laptop still builds the transaction; the signer stays offline from the general OS. That is powerful — not magical.
Before you buy
- Decide the asset families you need (Bitcoin-only vs multi-coin). Fewer features can mean smaller attack surface.
- Buy from the vendor or a disclosed authorized reseller. Avoid marketplace “open box” mystery devices.
- Plan your backup ritual before first funds move.
- Read the wallets pillar for seed hygiene.
Setup ritual (generic)
- Verify packaging and authenticity steps from the official vendor docs.
- Update firmware only through official channels.
- Generate a new seed on-device. Write it down. Do not photograph it.
- Confirm the seed with the device’s verification flow.
- Practice a recovery on a second device or after a wipe — with dust amounts.
- Only then move meaningful value.
Passphrases
A BIP39 passphrase can create a hidden wallet. It also creates inheritance and forgetfulness risk. If you use one, document the scheme for heirs without collocating passphrase and seed.

Operational tips
- Prefer clear-signing wallets/apps that show human-readable destination and amount.
- Multisig raises resilience and complexity — learn single-sig recovery first.
- A hardware wallet does not protect you from approving a malicious contract or sending to the wrong address you typed.
